May Potrero War

The Angel and I went down to the Potrero War this weekend. We'd meant to arrive on Friday afternoon, and were about two thirds of the way there when we got a call from the folks on site telling us it would be best if we turned back. They were getting a lot of rain, and had been all afternoon, and it was going to be a challenge to get us set up given the situation on the ground. I made a couple calls, then told the Angel I was turning back. She was not happy with that decision, but this is one of those areas were I get the only vote that counts, so back home we went.

I had us back on the road by 7:30 Saturday morning and we were on site by 10:30 or so. Everyone seemed to have weathered the storm well enough due to their natural heartiness, and some creative canal digging. After some consultation with Lord Philip and Lord Tighearnan the Angel and I decided not to put up our own pavilion, there just wasn't enough space for it, and the space that we might have been able to squeeze into was right next to the baseball diamond where one of the local war groups was scheduled to have there big party.

So we pulled what we would need out of the truck and stashed it in an extra tent that Mistress Medb had brought, with the understanding that we'd put our bed in the back of the truck and sleep in the parking lot. Not optimal, but proof against wind, water, and almost as importantly, drumming.

From that point on it was like any other war. We hung out with the barony, played some music, read some books, and shopped. I was hoping to find some good period shoes, but I couldn't find anything that actually fit that was in my period. I'm going to have to have something custom made, but I can't quite bring myself to part with the several hundred dollars that's going to cost.

The Lyondemere encampment is become a finely tuned machine. Lady Eva and Lord Jon Thomme were our camp Mom and Dad for this war and they did a great job. They of course had lots of help. Grainne, Saraphina, Conchobar, Wulfric, Aurelia and a host of others worked the kitchen and took care of countless chores. I know that many Lyondamarines also worked various volunteer shifts for the war itself, so they deserve a big thanks for that too.

Monday morning we had everything down and most people packed by 10:30. The traffic getting out of the park was amazing, and the event staff were encouraging everyone who was ready to leave to be about it. We said goodbye to everyone and headed home.
